about Small Towns

After planting seeds at BAC, Hide & Seek, and Shunt, last summer with the support of the National Theatre Studio we spent a week in A Small Town Anywhere. This was an experiment in playing a game to tell a story, or theatre with a playing audience, with up to 25 people putting on a hat and a badge and entering a town where they were the citizens. This was a town full of secrets and its citizens rather prone to gossip, especially using the local postal system. Events soon got out of hand...

This next stage, with the support of BAC, we are spending a week developing A Small Town Anywhere by day and at the end of each day, inviting people to join us in various Small Towns. The rules and stories of each small town will vary from day to day and you won't find these out until you arrive. They will be towns in varying degrees of development - some may be open-plan, some with history. But what we can pretty safely guarantee is that like last time, it will be interesting fun for you players. And you won't be forced to 'act' in either sense of the word, you can play just as well by observing your fellow citizens and scribbling notes as by doing anything else, and you can just be yourself.

We will be visiting four towns through the week, one a day from Tuesday to Friday. We're meeting at BAC at 6pm, thence walking ten minutes or so to reach the town, and play there will last no more than 90 minutes, probably much less. It's free entrance but places are limited for each day and we'd ask you to reserve your place in advance by emailing the Small Town Crier (indeed a person of diminutive stature but exceptional acuity).

Thanks very much.
